Sitting in an ice bath does not sound like fun to most of us mere mortals, but to many, it is part of the Wim Hof Method and has many health benefits. Danielle Smith shares her Wim Hof journey with Helen Hayes.

“I had my first Wim Hof experience with Wim himself in December 2018 when he was out in the Gold Coast running an event and it was honestly life changing. I personally felt like this was the first time I had arrived home into my own body and into the present moment. I suffered from mild anxiety and a really overactive mind. I was overthinking and was really rundown- constantly getting sick. I had been looking for years for a tool to help me with this but had continued to fall short – until I did the Wim Hof workshop. Afterwards it felt like this was the magic that I had been searching for. Within weeks I was more energised, focused and I was my most authentic self I have ever been. The breath and the ice baths bring you back into a state of connection to yourself.

I continued for three months with daily breathing, weekly ice baths and daily cold showers and felt so invigorated. It felt like I was finally in control of my mind, body and I wasn’t just a passenger to my own thoughts or life. It was this moment that I knew that I had to share this method with the world, so I enrolled in the academy program which commenced a month later.

In 2019 I went to The Netherlands and Poland to complete my training and became qualified as a Wim Hof Instructor in December of that year. I have been teaching ever since, instructing corporates, athletes, and just people wanting to understand and improve their health. The biggest thing that I have noticed is that I am able to respond in life rather than reacting. Before when challenges would arise, I would lose sleep thinking about it. I would constantly overthink and be so distracted. Now I am able to handle any stressor with ease and grace.

I get a range of people attending the courses I run, aged from 18-67 years old. I have athletes, mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, people with autoimmune diseases, people with anxiety, depression, people feeling lost and disconnected from themselves, people with joint pain and people looking to transform their health and overworked corporate business people.

The feedback I get from people straight after the workshop is how invigorated they feel, how present they feel, how blissful and connected they feel to themselves. People feel inspired and proud as most people feel like they would never be able to sit in an ice bath and are quite fearful of it. The fact that they are able to accomplish this by pushing past their fear and using their breath to calm themselves down in the ice makes them realise that our bodies are much more capable of doing challenging things than we give them credit for. It leaves them with the feeling of anything is possible and that they have control of their body and mind.

When I talk to people a couple of months after they finish the workshop they really notice how resilient they have become when they are faced with stress and challenges they are able to see things clearly and not be hot headed. They also notice their energy levels have increased exponentially, they are getting better quality sleep, their ability to focus and concentrate has improved drastically, circulation has improved and just their outlook on life is much more positive. The feel a deep sense of connection to who they are.”
