Are you suffering from financial fear? Do you worry about your financial future and regret financial mistakes of the past? Julia Scott CA explains why, financially, you are what you think about.
We all have worries, right? For many of us the answer is yes, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m about to explain how your financial position can be so much better once you let the financial fear go and focus on the positive. This is all science backed – You Are What You Think and it’s never too late to change your mind.
The Past
Let’s say you made some financial mistakes in past, or you’re concerned that you didn’t take saving for retirement more seriously in your earlier years. Firstly, don’t beat yourself up about it. We all do the best we can at the time. No-one sets out to make bad decisions so forgive yourself and move on. If you let go of the burden your load will become lighter. You will then have more energy for the present.
Secondly, the past is the past. No amount of worrying about it is going to change what happened. What you can change are your thoughts and actions now. Quantum physics confirms that our thoughts create our reality. The past is the past, but the future hasn’t happened yet! It makes sense to focus your energy on what you can control rather than what you can’t. One thing you can control is your own thoughts.
You are not your thoughts. Your thoughts are dictated by your mood, so lift it! Start by visualising the best possible outcome for your financial situation. What’s the harm in that? What have you got to lose? We’ll talk more about how to do this later.
Worry
95% of the world worries. This is because, as humans we are wired to look for the negative – this is what kept us safe in primitive times. For this reason, it’s easier for us to worry as a default rather than look for positive outcomes.
Here’s the thing though… the wealthiest 5% of people in our world chose the other way. When it comes to finances, they chose to look for the positive. The chose to look for opportunities. A classic case of seek and thou shall find.
In order to do that, they had to overcome their natural tendency to worry. You too can do this by creating new habits. Creating new habits initially takes effort but once formed, these habits will stick with you for life and set you up for success!
Goal setting is one habit that can massively affect the trajectory of your life. Think of it this way: if you don’t have a goal, how are you going to know what to do next? You won’t.
When you don’t know what to do next you start to feel fear, anxiety, and worry about the future. You become indecisive and overwhelmed. When you’re in a state of overwhelm your IQ drops by approximately 45%, which leads to the self-fulfilling prophecy of failure.
Do you see it now? You are what you think about, and your thoughts become your reality. If you think in negative terms, you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results.
We’re here to grow and enjoy life. Worry, fear and anxiety do not equal enjoyment. Worrying about your future finances is akin to negative manifesting. The quickest way to alleviate this worry is to create goals for your financial future. Then start heading in that direction.
The Power of Goal Setting
In the words of the world-famous neuroscientist Dr Joe Dispenza, “The best way to predict your financial future is to create it”.
One of the most powerful ways to create your financial future is to set written financial goals. (If you’d like some guidance from me on setting goals click HERE.) Studies confirm that you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals just by writing them down and reviewing them regularly.
Think of it this way:
⇒ The ship with no captain, crew or destination will most likely never make it out of the port. Even if it does make it out of the port, without guidance, it will most likely wash up on rocks or have an accident.
⇒ By setting a clear specific goal, you give your ship a direction. You know the first step. The rest will come as you move forwards and receive new information.
⇒ If you don’t set a goal, you become compliant to other people’s goals and end up somewhere you don’t want to be.
⇒ It’s estimated that only 3% of people have written goals.
⇒ 75% of people retire without enough wealth (and it’s my bet that none of them had written financial goals).
⇒ Know what you want and take planned action to move towards it.
The Power of Positive Thought
What you think today and tomorrow will mould your future. This is because:
⇒ Our thoughts influence our emotions
⇒ Our emotions influence our actions
⇒ Our actions create our reality
⇒ Our reality influences our thoughts
It follows that we must control our thoughts if we want to control our lives. Here are my top tips to start changing your thoughts and create your own successful future:
- Stop thinking of all the reasons why you can’t be successful and instead think of all of the reasons why you can. The choice is yours. What you focus on grows!
- Trace your beliefs about your own success back through your childhood and try to discover where you first learned the idea you couldn’t be a success, because you sure as hell weren’t born that way. Beliefs are learned they can therefore be unlearned. Start the process.
- Change the image you have of yourself by writing out a description of the woman you would like to be. What would the million-dollar version of you do now? What kind of choices would she make?
- Act the part of the successful woman you have decided to become. Close the gap between the woman you are today and the woman you desire to be five years from now.
